Kano Airport Set for Major Upgrade as Tinubu Approves ₦46bn Runway Project

The Federal Government has approved a ₦46 billion project for the reconstruction of the second runway at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, marking a major investment aimed at improving aviation infrastructure and strengthening northern Nigeria's air transport network.

The approval, granted by President Bola Tinubu, is expected to enhance the airport's operational capacity, improve safety standards, and support the growing number of domestic and international flights using the facility.

Government officials said the project forms part of ongoing efforts to modernise key airports across the country and position Nigeria's aviation sector for long-term growth. The reconstruction of the second runway is expected to reduce operational challenges, improve aircraft movement, and increase the airport's ability to accommodate future passenger and cargo traffic.

In addition to the runway project, work has also commenced on the construction and upgrade of facilities linked to Hajj operations at the airport. The new infrastructure is designed to improve the travel experience for thousands of Muslim pilgrims departing from Kano and neighbouring states during the annual pilgrimage.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the investment, describing it as a significant step towards improving airport infrastructure in northern Nigeria. They noted that modern airport facilities play an important role in supporting economic development, boosting tourism, encouraging investment, and facilitating trade.

The Kano airport serves as one of Nigeria's busiest aviation hubs, connecting passengers to several domestic destinations as well as international routes. Aviation experts believe that expanding and upgrading its facilities will strengthen regional connectivity while reducing pressure on existing infrastructure.
