The constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state police in Nigeria has been transmitted to the Senate by President Bola Tinubu.
The proposed legislation, conveyed in a letter dated June 15, 2026, was read during Tuesday's plenary session by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
According to the President, the bill aims to create a legal framework for a dual policing system that would permit states to establish and operate their own police services alongside the Nigeria Police Force.
Tinubu stated that the amendment forms part of broader efforts to reform the nation's security architecture, improve public safety, and strengthen the protection of lives and property.
He added that the proposed arrangement would give communities, municipalities, and local government councils greater involvement in policing and security management.
Following its introduction on the Senate floor, Akpabio referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review for further legislative consideration, directing the committee to submit its report on Wednesday.
