Labour Party's 2027 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has promised to introduce sweeping cost-cutting measures if elected, saying his administration would focus on reducing wasteful government spending and redirecting resources to sectors that directly improve the lives of Nigerians.
Speaking during an interview, Obi said one of his first actions in office would be to significantly reduce the size of the presidential fleet, insisting that the country can no longer afford the high cost of maintaining excessive government luxuries while millions of citizens struggle with economic hardship.
According to the former Anambra State governor, public officials must lead by example by embracing modest lifestyles and demonstrating prudent management of national resources. He argued that government should not ask citizens to make sacrifices while leaders continue to enjoy extravagant privileges funded by taxpayers.
Obi also pledged to end government funding for the Office of the First Lady, maintaining that the Nigerian Constitution only recognises the office of the President and does not provide for a separate government-funded structure for the president's spouse.
He explained that money saved from reducing unnecessary government expenditure would be channelled into key sectors such as education, healthcare, security and infrastructure, which he described as essential to driving economic growth and improving living standards.
The presidential hopeful reiterated his long-standing commitment to fighting corruption through transparent governance and accountability rather than relying solely on arrests and prosecutions. He stressed that responsible leadership and efficient management of public funds remain critical to restoring confidence in government institutions.
Obi also defended his publicly declared assets, stating that he has consistently maintained transparency throughout his political career. He further reaffirmed his promise to serve only a single four-year term if elected president in the 2027 general election, saying his focus would be on laying a strong foundation for national development.
His latest remarks come as debates over the high cost of governance continue to dominate public discourse amid rising inflation, increasing public debt and growing pressure on government finances. Many Nigerians have repeatedly called for reductions in the cost of running government, arguing that savings should be invested in projects that create jobs, strengthen public services and support economic recovery.
Obi said meaningful leadership requires discipline, accountability and a willingness to put the interests of the people above personal comfort, adding that prudent management of public resources is essential for Nigeria's long-term development.
