CCB Screens Asset Records of 108 Top-Risk Public Officials

Nigeria's anti-corruption monitoring efforts received a boost as the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) announced the completion of an extensive verification exercise involving the asset declarations of 108 senior public officials across various government institutions.

The exercise, according to the bureau, focused on public officers occupying positions considered highly susceptible to abuse of office and conflicts of interest. Those covered by the review include cabinet members, permanent secretaries, chief executives of federal agencies and other top government functionaries.

Speaking in Abuja, CCB Chairman Abdullahi Bello said the verification was part of measures aimed at ensuring strict compliance with constitutional provisions requiring public officers to declare their assets. He noted that the bureau remains committed to promoting integrity and accountability within the public service.

As part of its modernization drive, the bureau has also completed developing on a digital platform to manage asset declarations electronically. The Online Asset and Liabilities Declaration System is expected to improve record  keeping, simplify compliance procedures and enhance the monitoring of public officials' declared assets.

Bello further disclosed that the enforced activities by the bureau have yielded tangible results, including the recovery of assets linked to violations of the Code of Conduct. Some cases have also progressed to the Code of Conduct Tribunal for further legal action.

The CCB chairman emphasized that transparency initiatives would continue to play a central role in strengthening public confidence in government institutions. He added that cooperation with civil society organizations, the media and development partners remains essential in advancing accountability reforms.

During the event, attention was also drawn to a newly introduced Local Governance Accountability Portal, a platform intended to provide citizens with access to information relating to local government administration and public spending. The initiative is expected to encourage greater scrutiny of public funds and improve governance at the grassroots level.

Representatives of anti-graft agencies and accountability groups who attended the programme stressed the need for stronger oversight mechanisms, arguing that effective monitoring of public resources is critical to addressing corruption and improving service delivery nationwide.

The asset verification exercise forms part of broader efforts by government institutions to ensure that public officials uphold ethical standards and remain accountable to the citizens they serve.
