President Donald Trump announced on Friday that his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., has repaid a wealthy Russian businessman who covered a large part of the younger Trump’s wedding celebrations earlier this year. The statement comes amid growing questions about the expensive gift and the Russian’s close ties to the Kremlin.
The controversy began when investigative reports revealed that Umar Kremlev, a powerful figure who leads the International Boxing Association and has strong links to Russian President Vladimir Putin, spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the festivities. The money went toward renting a private island in the Bahamas and a fireworks display for the May 2026 celebrations of Donald Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina.
Kremlev is no ordinary businessman. His organization receives funding from the Russian state energy giant Gazprom. He has traveled with Putin and received high state honors from the Russian government. Ukrainian authorities have even sanctioned him, describing him as close to Putin’s security circle.
Donald Trump Jr. and his wife initially confirmed the gift, calling Kremlev a “dear friend” who generously hosted two nights of parties after their private wedding ceremony. They insisted it was a personal gesture with no business connections.
On Friday, President Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that when he asked his son about the reports, Don Jr. replied that he was paying the money back. “I’ve heard he’s paying him,” the president said, adding that a source close to his son later confirmed the repayment had taken place. Trump defended the original gift as completely normal. “It’s totally allowed,” he said. “A lot of people have parties… I’ve given wedding parties to numerous people.”
Democrats in Congress have launched an inquiry into the matter, raising concerns about possible foreign influence and the appearance of a conflict of interest — even though Donald Trump Jr. is a private citizen and not a government official. Ethics watchdogs have also flagged the situation as potentially problematic because of Kremlev’s high-level Russian connections.
The president’s comments appear aimed at closing the chapter on the story. Whether the repayment fully settles the questions, however, remains to be seen as investigations continue.
