The Kaduna State Government has taken concrete steps to address lingering industrial issues at Kaduna State University (KASU) by approving a one-off payment of ₦300 million as Earned Academic Allowance and constituting a nine-member negotiation committee to engage with staff unions.
The announcement was made on Monday, August 24, 2026, by the Secretary to the State Government, AbdulKadir Meyere. He described the intervention as a clear demonstration of Governor Uba Sani’s commitment to staff welfare, industrial harmony, and the overall stability of the state university.
According to Meyere, the ₦300 million payment forms part of ongoing efforts to clear a backlog of more than ₦800 million in accumulated entitlements and allowances that date back to 2016. In addition to this one-off payment, the government has settled outstanding withheld salaries and released over ₦300 million for the accreditation of academic programmes and resource-verification exercises for postgraduate courses.
Other recent interventions include the release of funds to clear outstanding SIWES supervision allowances and the establishment of a ₦50 million monthly standing order designed to systematically settle remaining arrears.
The newly constituted Negotiation Committee will be chaired by the Commissioner of Education, Abubakar Sambo. Its membership includes the Commissioner of Business, Innovation and Technology, Patience Fakai; Commissioner of Youth, Gloria Ibrahim; Chairman of the Local Government Service Board, Ladan Sharehu; Director-General of the Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority, Usman Zaria; the Vice-Chancellor of KASU, Abdullahi Musa; and the Pro-Chancellor, Ibrahim Umar. The Permanent Secretary, General Services, and the Permanent Secretary, Establishments Services and Training, will also serve on the committee, with the latter acting as Secretary.
The committee has been given four weeks to conclude its assignment and submit recommendations to the state government. Its mandate includes reviewing the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
It is also expected to examine the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), compare KASU’s conditions of service with those of other state universities, and assess the financial implications of implementing demands arising from the 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement. The committee has been directed to recommend practical, equitable, and financially sustainable solutions.
Meyere urged the unions to embrace dialogue, negotiation, and collective bargaining instead of resorting to industrial action that could disrupt the academic calendar and negatively affect students and their families. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to keeping channels of engagement open, strengthening KASU, improving staff welfare, and ensuring uninterrupted academic activities.
The dual approach of immediate financial relief and structured negotiation reflects an effort by the Kaduna State Government to resolve both short-term grievances and longer-term structural challenges at the university.
