The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved a regulatory framework that will govern airtime and data lending services across the country's telecommunications industry, but subscribers will have to wait longer as no official commencement date has been announced.
The development has generated interest among millions of mobile users who expect the service to provide temporary access to airtime and internet data during emergencies or when they are unable to make immediate purchases.
Although the framework has received regulatory approval, telecommunications operators are yet to begin implementation. Industry stakeholders say network providers are still reviewing the guidelines and putting the required technical systems in place before introducing the service to customers.
