The Federal Government has officially launched the second batch of its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme, reinforcing its commitment to equipping Nigerians with practical skills needed for employment, entrepreneurship and economic growth.
The latest cohort was inaugurated at the training facility of the I Choose Life Foundation, one of the accredited centres participating in the nationwide initiative. The orientation exercise was supervised by officials from the National Programme Monitoring Office, led by Tunji Odewunmi.
Speaking during the event, Odewunmi urged participants to make the most of the opportunity, describing the TVET programme as a platform that can transform lives through quality vocational education and hands-on training.
He explained that technical and vocational education remains one of the most effective ways to address unemployment, particularly among young people, by providing them with marketable skills that meet the demands of today's economy.
According to him, beneficiaries who complete the programme will be better positioned to secure gainful employment or establish their own businesses, thereby contributing to national economic development. He also noted that skills acquisition helps build confidence, encourages self-reliance and reduces the risk of involvement in social vices such as crime and drug abuse.
The Federal Government introduced the TVET programme as part of broader efforts to close Nigeria's skills gap and create a workforce capable of supporting industrialisation and innovation. Through partnerships with accredited training institutions across the country, the initiative offers practical instruction in various vocational and technical fields designed to improve employability.
Officials said the programme is expected to produce skilled professionals who can compete in both local and international labour markets while promoting entrepreneurship among participants.
The I Choose Life Foundation, which is hosting the current batch of trainees, said the initiative aligns with its mission of empowering young people through education, skills development and social support.
Representatives of the foundation noted that providing vocational training gives young Nigerians a pathway to financial independence and personal growth. They added that creating opportunities for productive engagement is also an important strategy in tackling drug abuse and other societal challenges.
The foundation encouraged participants to remain committed throughout the training, stressing that dedication, discipline and continuous learning are essential for success in today's competitive job market.
The Federal Government expressed optimism that the second cohort of the TVET programme will build on the achievements of the first batch and further expand opportunities for Nigerians seeking practical skills to improve their livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to national development.
