The Federal Government has approved a sweeping reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), introducing significant changes aimed at modernising the scheme and making it more responsive to the needs of young Nigerians.
The reforms, approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), are expected to reshape several aspects of the programme, including its leadership structure, orientation camp activities, and corps members’ deployment process.
One of the most notable changes is the replacement of military operational leadership with a civilian-led administrative structure. While military personnel will continue to provide security and support services during orientation exercises and other NYSC activities, the day-to-day management of the scheme will now be handled by civilians.
According to government officials, the move is intended to strengthen institutional governance and align the NYSC with contemporary public service practices while preserving its core objective of promoting national unity.
The reforms will also see the introduction of a redesigned NYSC uniform, which authorities say will reflect professionalism, national identity, and the evolving role of the scheme in national development. Details of the new uniform are expected to be unveiled in the coming months.
In addition, the government plans to overhaul the orientation camp programme by extending training activities and placing greater emphasis on entrepreneurship, digital skills, leadership development, and vocational training. The goal is to equip corps members with practical skills that can improve their employability and encourage self-reliance after service.
Another key aspect of the reform package is the deployment process. Corps members are expected to be posted to organizations and sectors that better match their academic backgrounds, skills, and career interests. Officials believe this will enable participants to gain more meaningful work experience during their service year.
The Federal Government also announced plans to improve camp facilities nationwide and introduce measures aimed at enhancing the safety and welfare of corps members.
Established in 1973, the NYSC has remained one of Nigeria’s most enduring youth programmes. Authorities say the latest reforms represent a major step toward ensuring the scheme remains relevant in a rapidly changing society while continuing to foster national integration and youth development.
The implementation process is expected to begin following necessary legislative and administrative adjustments.
