The Senate has approved the state police bill, marking a major step toward decentralised policing.
With its passage, the bill replaces the current Nigeria Police Force structure with a two-tier system made up of a Federal Police Service and State Police Services.
The legislation was presented by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and underwent debate before lawmakers considered it clause by clause and approved it through a third reading.
The bill secured the support of more than two-thirds of senators, meeting the constitutional requirement for its passage.
A key provision empowers state governors to appoint Commissioners of Police for their states, subject to confirmation by their respective state Houses of Assembly.
It is aimed at bringing policing closer to the people and improving security across the country.
