The Federal Government has approved 27 major road construction and rehabilitation projects valued at approximately ₦3.9 trillion, with the projects set to be executed across 15 states of the federation.
The approval was granted during a recent meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) chaired by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja. The projects are expected to improve road connectivity, ease transportation challenges, and support economic activities in various parts of the country.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed details of the approvals while briefing journalists after the council meeting. He said the road projects form part of the administration’s commitment to modernising critical infrastructure and enhancing the movement of people and goods nationwide.
According to Umahi, the approved projects cover several states, including Lagos, Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Benue, Plateau, Taraba, Adamawa, Ebonyi, Cross River, Ekiti, and Yobe.
One of the largest projects approved is a major highway development in Niger State, estimated to cost about ₦1.8 trillion. The project is expected to improve access to communities, reduce travel time, and stimulate economic growth within the region.
Other projects include the reconstruction and dualisation of key federal highways, rehabilitation of deteriorating road sections, and the construction of new road infrastructure aimed at strengthening links between major commercial centres and rural communities.
The government believes that the investments will contribute significantly to national development by improving logistics, lowering transportation costs, and creating employment opportunities for Nigerians during and after construction.
Officials also noted that improved road infrastructure remains a key component of the administration’s economic agenda, as reliable transportation networks are essential for trade, agriculture, manufacturing, and regional integration.
The approval of the projects comes amid ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to address infrastructure deficits and improve the condition of federal roads across the country.
Stakeholders have welcomed the development, expressing hope that the projects will be completed on schedule and deliver lasting benefits to residents and businesses in the affected states.
